Burger King Completely Overhauled Its Chicken Nuggets—Here’s How They Compare To The OG

Back in April, Burger King flew me to its headquarters in Miami to preview a bunch of upcoming menu innovations. Some of those launches, like the recent Mandalorian menu and Firecracker Pie for America 250, have already hit restaurants.

But one of the most exciting updates is finally here: a complete overhaul of Burger King’s chicken nuggets, along with four dipping sauces. The new nuggets officially launch September 1, and Burger King says the changes came directly from guest feedback—just like the new-and-improved Whopper.

After hearing complaints that its old nuggets were “rubbery,” “dry,” and “disappointing,” the chain went back to the kitchen and reworked basically every part of the experience. The new version is made with 100% white meat chicken, a more flavorful marinade, crispier golden breading, and updated packaging that now serves the nuggets in a box. Burger King also says the new recipe went through extensive testing, including feedback from kids, before making it to restaurants.

And because a nugget is only as good as what you dip it in, Burger King also refreshed its sauce lineup. There’s a new limited-time Special Savory Sauce, plus updated Honey Mustard, Buffalo, and Sweet & Sour. I got to taste all of them in Miami, but the most interesting part was trying the old and new nuggets side by side.

The New Chicken Nuggets

The old nuggets had a clear separation between the breading and the chicken inside, almost like the coating was sitting around the meat instead of actually clinging to it. There also just wasn’t much chicken in each bite, and the overall texture felt thin and a little dry.

Flavor-wise, they fell flat for me, which tracks with how low Burger King landed when I previously ranked a bunch of fast-food nuggets. The new version is a complete 180.

These nuggets are noticeably bigger, and the chicken itself is much juicier. The breading hugs the meat much more closely, so each bite feels more cohesive instead of getting a shell of coating followed by a separate piece of chicken. The exterior also has more crunch, but it doesn’t feel overly hard or greasy.

The marinade makes a real difference too. The meat has more savory flavor on its own, which means the nugget doesn’t immediately need sauce to save it.

That was probably the biggest improvement for me. The old nuggets tasted like something I was waiting to dip.

The new ones actually tasted good by themselves. I really enjoyed them, and this feels like the kind of menu change Burger King genuinely needed. I’m already curious to try them again once they’re rolled out to restaurants nationwide.

The New Sauces

Burger King also refreshed its dipping sauce lineup, with updated versions of Buffalo, Honey Mustard, and Sweet & Sour, plus a new limited-time Special Savory Sauce. The Buffalo was probably my favorite.

It had that nostalgic buffalo flavor I always want—tangy, buttery, a little vinegary, and just spicy enough without overpowering the nugget. The Special Savory Sauce surprised me the most, though. It has a ketchup-and-mayo base with BBQ spices and a little heat, and honestly reminded me of a spicier version of Cane’s Sauce.

The Honey Mustard definitely leans sweeter, but there was still enough mustard tang to keep it balanced, and I found myself going back for more. Sweet & Sour is never really my first choice, so it wasn’t my favorite of the bunch, but several other writers on the trip really liked it.

Overall, I’d go Buffalo first, Special Savory second, Honey Mustard third, and Sweet & Sour last, but there really isn’t a bad option in the lineup. The nuggets, though, are the real star.

Burger King did not make a tiny recipe adjustment and call it an upgrade. The new nuggets are bigger, juicier, more flavorful, and much better integrated with their breading, which makes the entire bite feel noticeably improved. After trying them side by side with the old version, I can confidently say this is one menu overhaul that actually feels necessary.
