- Scoop into a bowl and top with fresh fruit, nuts, seeds, and granola. Serve immediately for the best flavor and consistency.
Three easy smoothie bowl recipes, including strawberry blueberry, mango banana, and sweet green. Each blends up thick and scoopable in about 5 minutes.
I go through phases with smoothie bowls, and when I get on a kick, I can make one every single morning for weeks! Through this hyperfixation, I ended up with three versions I love and rotate through. And since a smoothie bowl is really just a thick smoothie you eat with a spoon, once I figured out how to get that scoopable texture, it was game on! There’s a strawberry-blueberry one, a mango-banana with a little turmeric, and a sweet green one that sneaks in spinach without tasting like it. Each one takes about five minutes in the blender.
For the past 10 years, I’ve tested every recipe before sharing it with you! These notes give you a peek into the process of developing these smoothie bowl recipes.
The texture was the whole battle, and it’s the difference between a smoothie bowl and just a smoothie in a bowl. My early attempts came out too thin to eat with a spoon, and the toppings sank straight to the bottom. Once I switched to all frozen fruit and pulled way back on the liquid, they got thick enough to actually scoop and hold their shape. Now I add liquid only a tablespoon at a time, just enough to get the blender moving, and stop the second it comes together.
Eat them right away, because they start to melt and lose that thick texture within a few minutes.
Smoothie Bowl Ingredients
Frozen fruit: I use frozen fruit instead of fresh because it makes the smoothie bowls extra smooth, thick, and creamy. It also means you don’t have to add ice cubes to the blender, which can dilute the taste and make it watery. I recommend getting in the habit of freezing fruit when it’s getting too ripe. Store it in a freezer-safe bag so it’s ready when you’re in the mood to make a smoothie!
Liquid: I like to use non-dairy milk in smoothies. Coconut milk is my favorite, but almond, oat, or soy work, too. You can also use coconut water or dairy milk if you prefer.
Add-ins: This is where you can get creative! Blend in 1 tablespoon of protein powder, chia seeds, nut butters, or yogurt. To make it sweeter, try 1 teaspoon of honey or maple syrup. And for extra greens, add a handful or two of frozen spinach.
Toppings: I like to top smoothie bowls with more fresh fruit, seeds, nuts, coconut flakes, dried fruit, mini chocolate chips, granola, and muesli. It’s fun to make a beautiful presentation on top of the smoothie bowl for yourself!
