Fortune Cookie Recipe: a crunchy homemade recipe with a tip for sealing it so it tastes just like restaurant-quality cookies, submitted

After a meal with dishes like Kung Pao chicken or yakisoba, there's no better dessert than a fortune cookie! This small, crunchy cookie that hides a message is a classic after a meal full of Asian dishes. Fun and delicious, fortune cookies don't have to be a tradition only for when you go to an Asian restaurant.

Ingredients · Servings 30
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup (tea) of wheat flour
  • 1 tablespoon of water (or more if needed)
Method · 40 min
  1. In a bowl, mix the eggs, sugar, butter, and vanilla.
  2. Add the wheat flour and mix until it dissolves.
  3. Add water to bring the dough to the right consistency; it needs to be slightly runny.
  4. Using a spoon, place a small amount of dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Use the spoon to spread the dough into a thin disc.
  5. Bake in a preheated oven at 200ºC for about 5 to 10 minutes, until the edges are golden brown but the center is still light. Note: bake in small batches, no more than 5 each, because you will need to shape the cookies while they are still warm.
  6. When it's ready, remove it from the oven and start shaping it into a fortune cookie shape immediately. Use an oven mitt if needed to avoid burns. Place a small piece of paper with your fortune written on it, fold the disc in half, use the rim of a glass to support it, and pull the edges down.
  7. Repeat the process with all the dough discs from the batch and bake more batches until all the dough is used. Then just wait for them to cool completely and you'll have your own homemade fortune cookies!
