Tuna Tart

I got tired of making this pie in a large size, but after making it smaller in these molds that are bigger than mini pie tins (about twice the size), I never made the large one again.

Wow, that looks delicious!!! It turned out so soft, I can't say why the dough made in the smaller molds is so much softer, I think it's because it's in the oven for less time, I really don't know, but I know that if I were you I would try making this version too because it was incredible!!!

The pie recipe is the same one I made in this post HERE (both the crust and the topping). I filled the tartlet molds halfway with dough, added the tuna topping, and baked them.

What are the nutritional benefits of tuna tarts?

Tuna tarts are an excellent option for those seeking practical, tasty, and nutrient-rich meals.

Tuna, the main ingredient, is known for its high protein content, essential for muscle maintenance and body recovery.

Furthermore, it is a natural source of omega-3, a good fat that promotes heart health by reducing levels of bad cholesterol and preventing cardiovascular disease.

Another benefit is the supply of vitamins such as B12 and D, which are essential for bone health and the nervous system.

The combination of ingredients in the tart, such as vegetables and whole-wheat dough, can be adjusted to increase fiber, aiding digestion and prolonging the feeling of fullness.

What are some alternative ingredients for tuna pie?

To make the recipe even more versatile, you can explore a variety of ingredients to suit different preferences and dietary restrictions.

Therefore, you can adapt the tart to your taste or specific needs without losing flavor or nutritional quality.

Pasta options

If you want to vary the recipe or cater to dietary restrictions, there are several pasta alternatives. For a lighter version, try making the pasta with oat flour, which is rich in fiber and helps control blood sugar.

For a softer texture, on the other hand, opt for blender-made dough, which is quick and easy to prepare. For a more rustic touch, whole wheat flour offers a distinct flavor and maintains crispness.

Filling substitutions

Although tuna is the main ingredient, it's possible to diversify the filling of the tart. For those looking to reduce their meat consumption, an excellent alternative is sautéed vegetables, such as:

  • spinach;
  • zucchini;
  • broccoli.

Another option is seasoned shredded chicken, which pairs very well with fresh herbs. If you prefer more sophisticated flavors, mushrooms are a delicious addition.

What are some tips for preparation and storage?

Preparing and storing tuna tarts can be even more efficient with a few simple strategies that guarantee flavor, texture, and freshness for longer.

How to make a crispy dough

The secret to a crispy crust lies in using chilled butter and the technique of not overworking the dough with your hands, preventing it from warming up.

Another tip, by the way, is to pre-bake the base for a few minutes before adding the filling. This ensures a well-baked tart with an impeccable texture.

Storage of the tart

For those who like convenience, tuna pies can be easily frozen. After preparation, wait for them to cool completely, wrap them in plastic wrap or airtight containers, and freeze for up to 3 months.

To reheat, use the oven to preserve the crispness, avoiding the microwave, which can make the dough rubbery.

What are some suggested side dishes?

Tuna tarts are versatile and pair well with different side dishes. Thinking about the dishes and drinks that complement their flavor can transform a simple meal into a complete experience.

For a light meal, opt for a green salad with vinaigrette, which offers freshness and a light touch. If you prefer something more substantial, serve it with creamed corn or vegetable soup.

As a beverage, natural lemon or orange juice balances the flavors and enriches the experience with citrus notes.

Green salad with mustard and honey dressing.

A green salad with a light mustard and honey dressing can be the perfect accompaniment to tuna tarts. The mild, slightly sweet dressing contrasts with the flavor of the tuna, creating a pleasant balance on the palate.

Coconut rice or brown rice

Coconut rice or brown rice can be an excellent choice to accompany the tarts. Coconut rice offers a subtle and creamy flavor, while brown rice adds a firmer texture and extra nutrition to the dish.

Roasted potatoes with herbs

Roasted potatoes with rosemary, thyme, and olive oil are another great side dish. The crispiness of the roasted potatoes complements the smoothness of the tarts, creating a complete and flavorful meal.

What are the regional variations of tuna pie?

Tuna pie comes in different versions across Brazil, adapting to local ingredients and regional preferences.

Northeastern pie

In the Northeast of Brazil, it's common to substitute wheat flour with cassava or corn flour. Additionally, tuna can be mixed with curd cheese and seasoned with cilantro.

Southern Pie

In southern Brazil, the recipe takes on a creamier touch, including homemade cream cheese and fresh herbs such as parsley and chives.

Fitness version

For those seeking a healthier alternative, the dough can be made with almond or oat flour, and the filling can include canned tuna, yogurt, and chia seeds.

How to choose the best tuna for the tart?

Fresh tomato vs. canned tomato

Fresh tuna has a more intense flavor and can be grilled before being used in recipes. Canned tuna, which is convenient and affordable, should be drained properly to avoid excess liquid in the filling.

Sustainability in tuna selection

Choose brands that use sustainable fishing practices and avoid products that contain excessive preservatives.

What sauces go well with tuna tarts?

Sauces can add a special touch to tuna tarts, making them even more delicious.

Yogurt sauce with herbs:

  • ½ cup of plain yogurt;
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil;
  • 1 teaspoon of chopped parsley;
  • Salt and pepper to taste.

Homemade tartar sauce:

  • ½ cup of mayonnaise;
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice;
  • 1 tablespoon of chopped pickled cucumber;
  • 1 teaspoon of mustard.

What drinks pair well with tuna tart?

Options like Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay pair well due to their acidity and freshness.

Natural juices

Citrus juices, such as lemon and orange, balance the flavor of tuna.

Iced teas

Peppermint and chamomile teas bring lightness and refreshment to the meal.
