Sambol is such a side dish that goes well with rice, flatbreads/roti, bread, string hoppers, pittu.

The basic ingredients in a Sambol in whichever form is made with onions, chilli (green/red) and lime.

Combining these essentials and adding a few others depending on the Sambol you make, you could put together an amazing side dish.

A very quick dish that could be assembled and even eaten on its own with any of the main accompaniments as mentioned above.

Tips on making the coconut milk onion sambol.

  • Please note the amount of Green Chilli and Chilli Flakes could be altered according to your preference.
  • When roasting the Chilli Flakes make sure your exhaust is on and prevent it from burning. Burnt Chilli can induce cough, a very strong smell and tearing.

Stop food wastage- Make only the quantity needed or any leftover coconut milk sambol can be added to whatever curries you are cooking that needs coconut milk and is made the same day.

A sprig of curry leaves finely sliced.

Mix together the onions (1 Large), Green Chilli (2), Curry Leaves in a bowl until all the onions are individually separated as shown in the picture.

Add the Coconut Milk (1/2 a cup) and season with salt.

Mix well until the mixture is well immersed. Add the Chilli Flakes (1 tsp) into the Pan and slightly roast on medium heat until it becomes fragrant.

Then add it to the Sambol Mix and season with Lime (1 tsp).
