Ripe avocados stay fresh for '2 weeks' if you store them in area of fridge
Avocados stay fresher for longer when you store them in 1 place once ripe Avocados are a popular fruit but can be tricky to store properly – here's how to keep them fresh for longer using a simple fridge storage tip Avocados have become a kitchen essential for countless households.
“Coating the flesh with lemon or lime juice helps keep it fresh and green. The acidity slows oxidation, preserving both the colour and texture. It's a simple trick that makes a big difference.”
They're a favourite for breakfast alongside eggs and toast, and they also feature in salads and smoothies. Yet, despite their widespread appeal, one of the biggest challenges people encounter with avocados is understanding how to store them correctly to prevent them from going off. The lifespan of the fruit can vary depending on factors such as its ripeness at purchase and storage methods, but typically ranges from three to seven days at room temperature.
Fortunately, waste management specialists at Wheeldon Brothers have revealed a straightforward storage technique to keep them fresh for "two weeks".
Keeping the fruit riper for longer
The specialists explained: "Avocados are one of the most wasted foods because of their speedy ripening process." "But refrigerating fully ripe avocados can extend their freshness for up to two weeks, reducing their chances of going brown."
It's crucial to transfer them to the fridge only after they've become softer and riper, as placing an unripe avocado in the fridge can require weeks to soften. The ideal location is the crisper drawer at the bottom of your fridge, though any clean, stable shelf will suffice if space is limited.
Keeping cut avocados fresh
After being cut, avocados are susceptible to browning owing to a natural enzyme that reacts with oxygen. However, there is a simple method to slow this process down.
The experts explained: "Coating the flesh with lemon or lime juice helps keep it fresh and green. The acidity slows oxidation, preserving both the colour and texture.
It's a simple trick that makes a big difference."
Freezing an avocado
Freezing can be a viable method for prolonging the shelf life of fruit, though it isn't suited to every purpose, according to the specialists.
They said: "Freezing avocados can keep them fresh for up to four months. However, the texture can change after thawing, so frozen avocados work best for recipes where they'll be mashed or blended. "If freezing, cut them into chunks or slices and store them in an airtight bag."
Purchasing avocados with your intended use in mind can also go a long way toward reducing waste. If you're not planning to eat them straight away, opt for unripe ones and allow them to ripen naturally at room temperature. The waste experts noted: "Once they're ripe, refrigerate them to extend their freshness.
This way, you can better control their ripening and avoid throwing them out too soon."
