Open around the clock, Restaurant Reaz Corner dishes out affordable Indian fare at any hour of the day. Get their signature Bombay briyani, which is Mumbai’s version of the famous Indian rice dish.

The Nasi Briyani Ayam Tandoori (RM13) is served with curry, two large pieces of crispy papadum, tender chicken tandoori, fragrant rice, and a side of vegetables. To wash down the grease, get a cup of classics such as Milo (RM2.60) and Teh (RM1.80) as well.

Restoran Uncle Pou Wok is a popular zi char spot with multiple outlets around JB. Their most-visited branch appears to be the Mount Austin eatery, which has an impressive 4.6-star rating from close to 2,500 Google reviews at the point of writing.

You have to try the KL Hokkien Mee (from RM13.50+), starring thick udon wok-fried with prawns, fish cake, cuttlefish, and Chinese sausage, then coated in dark soya sauce. Complement your noodles with a side of Sweet & Sour Fish Fillet (from RM25+), where crunchy fish chunks are glazed with a sticky and tangy sauce. If you can’t get enough lok lok, head to Broloklok for skewers from just RM1. Get classics such as bacon-wrapped enoki mushrooms, chicken wings, mantou and more.

Sauces are also free-flow! They even have tiger prawn lok lok here, only priced at RM1 for a huge, fresh piece.

• 4. Dai Tao Lala Pot

For affordable claypot lala in JB that opens till late, there’s no place like Dai Tao Lala Pot, where you get to choose from over 30 ingredients, mostly priced under RM38. Start with the Dai Tao Signature Soup (RM38), where the staff flambees the various ingredients of your choice with ginger, Shaoxing wine, and raw and fried garlic right in front of you.

Some popular liao include Marbled Pork Slice (RM15.90) and Australia Beef Slice (RM38), the latter being the most expensive of the lot. For seafood options, we recommend their Handmade Prawn Ball (RM18.90) and Hokkaido Scallop (RM29.80).

Hidden behind a huge blue door is The Blue Door Coffee House in Mount Austin, where you’ll find a good selection of matcha drinks and desserts. The cafe opens till 12am on weekends, making it a go-to spot for night owls!

Speaking of matcha, we really enjoyed the Matcha ah Yuzu (RM20), a concoction of Niko Neko matcha and sweet-tangy yuzu compote topped with a biscuit. If matcha isn’t your thing, get the Creme Brulee Latte (RM23) or Earl Grey Cham (RM25) instead; the latter is a combination of an espresso shot, fresh milk, and Earl Grey tea finished with velvety smooth Earl Grey cream.

K-Fry Urban Korean has over 17K Google reviews at the time of writing. Impressed by the positive online reviews, we visited their Holiday Villa Johor Bahru City Centre outlet.

For diners in a group of three or four, we recommend the Honey Mustard Cheesy Fried Chicken Bumbuk (RM74.20), which features 12 pieces of boneless fried chicken coated in honey mustard sauce and mozzarella cheese on a pan. For a legit bowl of kuay teow in JB, steer the family towards Restoran Woon Kiang. Just a 10-minute drive from the customs, it’s a quick and easy stop to satisfy your appetite. The Kway Teow Kia (from RM2.50) takes the spotlight here, featuring a medium-sized bowl of silky-smooth noodles in a slightly herbal broth.

Opt for the Belly, Intestine, or Ear meat to accompany your noodles, all priced at RM9 each. Do note that prices depend on the portion ordered.

You can’t leave JB without visiting one of its many popular zi char eateries. Ong Shun Seafood Restaurant is one such spot that’s not to be missed, serving up mouth-watering zi char dishes at wallet-friendly prices. Start with their Moonlight Kuay Teow (price TBD), which feeds up to eight people.

When the late-night wanton mee cravings hit, most denizens of JB head to Hw Wan Tan Mee to satisfy it. Choose from Black Sauce or White Sauce Wantan Mee (from RM9.40), which while simple in their own regard, are considered some of the best wantan mee in JB with strong flavours and a heap of char siew and pork lard.

• 11. Brooos & Co

For those looking for a cafe to get some work done or enjoy me time, consider Brooos & Co. Located just a 15-minute drive from the customs, the cafe features a cool office-themed cafe interior with plugs.

Food-wise, we tried their JWC Tacos (RM50++), which comprises tacos in three different flavours: Smoked Duck, Smoked Salmon and Pulled Chicken. The former was our favourite, as the duck was meaty and the taco was loaded with guacamole.

• 12. Hidden Garden By The Sea

Those looking for a Bali-esque vibe shouldn’t skip Hidden Garden By The Sea. The gorgeous cafe has mains under $10, and opens till 12am every day.

The space is decked with wooden chairs, rattan lanterns, and other Balinese-inspired furniture, and the best part is that it’s located right along the Singapore-Malaysia straits, so you can snap photos with the sea as your backdrop. Food-wise, opt for the Fusion Seafood Spaghetti (RM42+) if you love seafood; it consists of al dente noodles in a Sarawak laksa sauce, topped with squid, clams, and fresh prawns.

Da Cheng Lok Lok is my go-to for a late-night lok lok experience in JB. Located right outside KSL City Mall, the ordering process here is straightforward. Simply bring your favourite meats, vegetables, and seafood skewers to the cashier, take a seat, and wait for your number to be called.

Options here are limitless, with popular picks including hotdog, meatballs, mantou and more. Each skewer is deep-fried, and you can pair them alongside the free-flow sauces, including a Thai sweet sauce and their house-made extra spicy chilli sauce. Read our Da Cheng Lok Lok Singapore feature.

Located just a 15-minute walk from JB customs is Pasar Karat, a popular night market boasting over 12,000 reviews on Google at the point of writing. You can expect a wide variety of stalls and cheap eats here, ranging from coconut ice cream and takoyaki to cold drinks and fruits. At the night market stall Lokching, you can get sausages grilled to order, priced at RM13 for five sausages!

• 15. Super Steamboat Restaurant

For a super affordable steamboat and BBQ buffet in JB that opens till late, check out Super Steamboat Restaurant. Here, you can enjoy hotpot for just RM 59++, which amounts to about S$20 per person!

For a supper that’s slightly more atas, head to Deep Bistro, a chill (literally) hideout that’s igloo-themed. Stepping inside feels like entering a magical, icy cave!

For the hungry, their signature mains are the Grilled Salmon with Cod Fish Sauce (RM38.99) or Yellowtail Cheek with Salt (RM29.99). Otherwise, go for small bites such as the Croquettes Stuffed with Potatoes, Cheese and Crab (RM12.99) and pair them with draft beers. The bistro is open until 1am, and even features live music from performing bands on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9pm.

Restoran Chiam Hua is best known for its bak kut teh: a pot of flavourful Mixed Bak Kut Teh that starts from RM18 per person. But the eatery is also known for its tasty zi char dishes.

Options such as Red Wine Chicken (RM21), Fried Kembong Fish (from RM12), and Dried Radish Omelette (from RM13) add plenty to your meal beyond just bak kut teh. This is for those looking for large, hearty meals that are available till late!

Selera Senibong Seafood is a halal seafood option housed in a building by the waterfront. You will find tanks upon tanks of live seafood for you to pick your dinner from, with the seafood fresh from Senibong Cove, right where the restaurant is located.

They are most known for their Spicy Chilli Sauce Crab and Golden Salted Egg Prawn, among a dizzying array of other seafood, all charged at market price. They are open till 12am daily, so this is definitely a viable supper spot!

Pan Mee cravings can get strong when visiting JB, and the late-night selection can be limited. Thankfully, Family Signature Pan Mee at Mount Austin is open 24/7, ready to serve fresh noodles any time. Their comforting Pan Mee (RM8.90) comes in either white or black sauce, and we heard that their noodles are thicker than others for a firmer bite.

Outdoor BBQ spot BBQ Doubtful Life is a great location to ponder about your life at 2am, especially with your makan kakis. They specialise in Sichuan BBQ sticks, with a huge variety of meat, vegetables, and seafood priced from RM1.90. If you’re feeling hungrier for more than just sticks, go for their Premium 16 Heads Abalone Platter (from RM28.90) that’s perfect for sharing, or their Emotional Noodle (RM13.90) that helps get the late-night blues out of the way.
