Is an avocado a vegetable or a fruit?

Avocados are found in salads, on toast, in guacamole, and even in smoothies. But is it really a vegetable or a fruit? In short: the avocado is a fruit. More specifically, it's a fruit that develops from the flower of the avocado tree. And, surprisingly, it also belongs to the berry group.

So why is it so often classified as a vegetable?

The avocado is a fruit

A fruit develops from the ovary of a flower and usually contains seeds. This also applies to the avocado: the large pit in the center is the fruit's seed. Therefore, avocados are classified as fruits. In fact, according to the botanical definition, an avocado is a berry. This might sound strange, because when you think of berries, you probably think of blueberries, raspberries, or strawberries.

So why do we think that the avocado is a vegetable?

This is mainly due to how we use avocados. Avocados aren't sweet like many other fruits and are primarily used in savory dishes. Think of guacamole, avocado salad, avocado on toast, or poke bowls. In cooking, we often distinguish between sweet and savory fruits. Avocados clearly fall into the latter category. The same is true, for example, of tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers: they are also fruits, but in cooking, we tend to treat them as vegetables.

Is an avocado a berry?

Yes! According to botanical classification, the avocado is a berry. A berry develops from a single flower and has pulp surrounding the seed. The avocado meets these characteristics. And the avocado isn't the only surprising berry. Tomatoes, grapes, and eggplants also belong to this category. Strawberries, on the other hand, aren't true berries according to the scientific definition.

Is avocado healthy?

Avocado fits perfectly into a varied diet. This fruit contains, among other things, unsaturated fats, fiber, and various vitamins and minerals. Thanks to its high fat content, avocado also has a deliciously creamy texture. This makes it very versatile in the kitchen: you can use it as a spread, in salads, as a base for sauces, or as a creamy ingredient in all kinds of dishes.

How do you eat an avocado?

A ripe avocado is soft and creamy inside. Cut it lengthwise around the pit, separate the two halves by twisting them, and remove the pit. Then, using a spoon, you can scoop out the flesh. Avocados discolor quickly when exposed to air. A little lemon or lime juice can help slow this discoloration.

Conclusion: Vegetables or fruit?

The avocado is a fruit. More specifically, it's a fruit and, according to botanical classification, even a berry. In cooking, we mainly use avocados in savory dishes, so they're often classified as a vegetable. But officially, it belongs to the fruit family!
