The Best Takeout and Delivery Food in Austin

Ordering takeout is a reliable source of comfort, especially when it means eating on the couch, pants-optional, with full control of the remote. However, let’s be honest, some dishes fare better on the ride home than others.

Whether it’s soup dumplings from Mian & Bao in the Triangle, tacos and nachos from mini-chain Taco Flats, comforting bowls from the Soup Peddler, or flavorful chicken dishes from P Thai’s Khao Man Gai & Noodles, these places make to-go food a full-on experience.

A quick note: While delivery apps are convenient, restaurants retain a higher percentage of the profit when orders are placed directly from their own websites or by phone. The spots below all offer takeout and, in many cases, delivery without the need for a third-party app.

In this update, French chicken takeout spot Austin Rotisserie, thin pizza East Side Pies, and healthy grain bowl chain Honest Mary’s join the list. And Kabab Ghar Austin and Artipasta rotate out.

Sunflower Vietnamese Cuisine

The Milwood restaurant makes it easy to bring home a comforting Vietnamese meal. Banh xeo (crepes) arrives crisp and savory, and the bo luc lac (shaken beef) offers plenty of garlicky depth. The steamed sea bass dishes are all showstoppers. Online ordering is available for carryout through the website.

Himalaya Kosheli Nepali & Indian

Tucked in Barrington Oaks, this casual restaurant offers Nepali and Himalayan favorites with bold flavors. Chicken momos (Nepali-style pan-fried dumplings), goat curry, and paneer chili make for a well-rounded spread. There’s plenty of variety without too much decision fatigue. Order online for pickup.

Usta Kababgy

Fire-grilled meats, such as lamb tikka and chicken shawarma, take center stage on the menu at this halal Mediterranean restaurant, with locations on North Lamar and in Round Rock. The beef kebab wrap packs in smoky char and garlic sauce, while the halal double cheeseburger offers a satisfying detour. Mix-and-match platters make it easy to feed a few people without much fuss. Order online through its website for takeout or delivery.

Korea House

West Anderson’s Korea House turns even a takeout meal into something celebratory. Try the bubbling budae jjigae or the milky ox bone soup. Kimbap and kimchi pancakes travel with ease. Get all the banchan. Order online for pickup or delivery.

Austin Rotisserie Takeaway

It’s easier than ever for North Austinites to go Française, thanks to Austin Rotisserie’s second location at ATX Kitchens, a takeout and delivery outpost with a drive-thru for quick pickup. The original location inside Fareground serves signature rotisserie birds and potatoes alongside sandwiches on excellent baguettes, while the expanded North menu adds porchetta, smoked salmon, housemade pâté and rillettes, plus pâté en croûte, and French desserts including crème brûlée and mousse au chocolat. Order delivery or takeaway online.

Stiles Switch BBQ

Meats from this Brentwood, Cedar Park, and Dripping Springs favorite hold up well, thanks to low-and-slow smoking. Go for the brisket and spicy sausage, with a scoop of corn casserole or macaroni and cheese. End with the peach cobbler or chocolate cake if you’re feeling indulgent. Order directly on the website.

Taco Flats

Tacos don’t need much help, but this mini-chain handles them especially well at locations in Allandale, East Austin, Clarksville, Lakeway, and more. Carne asada tacos hit the grill just right, and the panchos (giant, cheesy nachos) are rich and comforting. Queso and margaritas both travel easily. Each location offers online ordering and delivery.

Honest Mary’s

With five Austin-area locations, it’s downright convenient to get a build-your-own grain bowl fix from Honest Mary’s. Load one up with whatever sounds good, or opt for a signature bowl like the Sedona Lime or Garden Pesto. There are plenty of options for vegan, paleo, gluten-free, and dairy-free diets, and Honest Mary’s sources mostly local ingredients while skipping seed oils, refined sugar, artificial ingredients, and meat raised with hormones. Basically, it’s a literal way to veg out on the couch. Order delivery or pick-up online.

Mian & Bao

Soup dumplings and sheng jian bao (pan-fried pork buns) travel well at this Triangle-area Chinese restaurant. Spicy Sichuan beef noodles offer a chewy, spicy main course. The menu features a split between Shanghai and Sichuan classics, so it’s worth mixing and matching. Order online for pickup or delivery.

East Side Pies

With so many locations across the city, “East Side” may have become a bit of a misnomer, but this thin-crust pizza purveyor has been slinging pies for 20 years and keeps growing. With locations on Rosewood, Burnet Road, and 183, there’s likely an East Side Pie within striking distance for pickup or delivery. The specialty pies go beyond the standard, with options like the Chimi Hendrix, topped with chimichurri, chicken, red bell peppers, and gorgonzola. And don’t overlook the cookies, particularly the surprisingly good black and white. Order delivery or pick-up online.

Chef Thai Changthong brings steady comfort at this North Loop restaurant with standout Thai Chinese dishes. The namesake khao man gai features poached chicken, chicken-fat rice, and a sweet chile sauce that brings it all together. Order through the walk-up window, through the drive-thru, or order ahead for curbside to-go service.

Love Supreme Pizza Bar

Pizza isn’t the only thing that travels well from this Blackland neighborhood spot. Order the signature pie topped with sausage, kale, and watermelon radish, and don’t miss try the Nashville hot wings. Even the chopped salad stays crunchy. Order online for delivery or pickup.

Tumble 22 [Lake Austin]

If you’re in need of fresh fried chicken that travels exceptionally well, this Austin-born chain is a dependable option. Tumble 22 specializes in crispy, craggy fried bone-in chicken and tenders in various flavors, ranging from “painless” to “stupid hot” and a Korean-style chicken with a kick of gochujang. Best of all, diners feeding a lot of people can order a family pack, which comes with up to 36 chicken bites, eight or 12 bone-in pieces, or nine or 12-piece tenders, from any of its four locations. Don’t forget the sides — the macaroni and cheese and collard greens are the perfect pairing, as well as a slice of Texas pecan pie with toffee and chocolate. Order online for delivery or pickup.
